Summer in New York: The Ultimate Guide to EDM Shows in Brooklyn
A Guide to the Top Venues: Beats for the Underground
When summer hits in New York City, everyone looks to get out to see their favorite artists with their friends. House music may have started in Chicago, but we know the place to be is Brooklyn. Come the warmer months, New Yorkers flock eastward as Brooklyn turns into a playground for Electronic Dance Music (EDM) fans. If you're ready to dive into Brooklyn's summer EDM shows, here's your go-to guide for an unforgettable time.
Brooklyn's lively EDM scene has something for everyone. Unfortunately, since you can't be in two places at once every weekend, you may have to pick and choose your spots. These are our favorite venues:
Avant Gardner
This massive complex is the heart of Brooklyn's EDM scene. With multiple rooms and an outdoor venue called The Brooklyn Mirage, Avant Gardner hosts some of the biggest names in electronic music. The venue's top-notch sound system and amazing light shows make it a fan favorite. The Kings Hall and the Great Hall offer different atmospheres, from intimate sets to large-scale productions. The outdoor Mirage is particularly magical in the summer, having played host to names ranging from Martin Garrix to Afterlife.
Elsewhere
This versatile spot in Bushwick has a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces. The rooftop is a summer highlight, offering great views of the city and an intimate setting for electronic music lovers. Elsewhere features three main areas: Zone One, a smaller club space; The Hall, a larger concert space; and The Rooftop, perfect for summer parties with its open-air setup and colorful murals. Our favorite show of last season? SG Lewis, where the rooftop vibes were immaculate.
Good Room
Located in Greenpoint, Good Room is known for its cozy setting and high-quality sound. This nightclub is a beloved spot for both up-and-coming and established DJs, with a welcoming and energetic atmosphere. The venue features two main rooms: the Good Room, with its impressive sound system and disco ball, and the Bad Room, a smaller, more intimate space with its own unique vibe. Are you feeling naughty, or nice?
Knockdown Center
Just across the Brooklyn-Queens border, this huge venue hosts various music events, including EDM shows. Its industrial vibe and spacious layout are perfect for large-scale events. The Knockdown Center, a converted factory, boasts multiple rooms and outdoor areas, making it a flexible space for all kinds of events. The main room features high ceilings and a massive dance floor, while the outdoor space often hosts food trucks and art installations. Mau P's set earlier this year still has us itching to go back.
Silo
Known for its underground vibe and killer sound system, Silo is a newer addition to Brooklyn's EDM scene. This intimate venue draws a dedicated crowd looking for a raw and authentic experience. Located in East Williamsburg, Silo's minimalist decor and dark, industrial atmosphere make it a perfect spot for underground techno and house music lovers.
99 Scott
This multi-purpose space in East Williamsburg is a favorite for bigger EDM events. With its industrial-chic look and roomy layout, 99 Scott is great for both live performances and DJ sets. The venue features high ceilings, exposed brick, and plenty of open space, giving it a raw and edgy feel. The outdoor courtyard is a great spot to chill between sets and enjoy the summer air.
Brooklyn Storehouse
This historic industrial complex has been transformed into a unique event space, hosting some of the most memorable EDM shows in Brooklyn. Promotional group Teksupport's Brooklyn Storehouse (formerly known as Building 293) is the newest addition, hosting the likes of Eric Prdyz and Charlotte de Witte. Its expansive layout and waterfront location make it a standout venue for summer events. The Navy Yard's large, open spaces are perfect for big crowds and the production is top notch. Some of the biggest names in the dance world will be playing here later this summer and into the fall.
From veteran concertgoers - here are some tips
Buy Tickets Early
Popular shows can sell out fast (often months in advance), so grab your tickets early. Follow venues and promoters on social media for updates on upcoming events. If you miss out, you can find tickets securely from other fans on CrowdVolt.
Stay Hydrated
With all the dancing and summer heat, drinking plenty of water is a must. Most venues have water stations or sell bottled water, but you'll often pay a hefty premium.
Dress for Comfort
While you can definitely show off your style, comfort is key. Wear breathable clothes and comfy shoes since you'll be on your feet all night. If you're at the Mirage - odds are half the guys will be shirtless anyways.
Arrive Early
Get to the venue early to avoid long lines and snag a good spot on the dance floor. This also gives you a chance to explore the venue and soak in the atmosphere before the main act starts. Set times are often leaked through promoters and their social networks (or try the CrowdVolt mailing list!)
Respect the Scene
Brooklyn's EDM scene thrives on mutual respect and good vibes. Be mindful of those around you, respect personal space, and contribute to the friendly and inclusive atmosphere.
Conclusion
Going to an EDM show is not just a night out, but a communal experience shared with friends and strangers alike. Not only should you expect top-tier talent showing off their latest mixes in the Big Apple, but also a strong sense of community spirit. New York or nothing, right? The light shows and visual effects accompanying these shows bring a whole other dimension into play. Dancing until the sun begins to rise at the Mirage or Elsewhere (or even in the streets with the City Soul Bus) will be a core memory!
New York, let's dance!
